Virgin's Mega Tsunami Benefit Rocked!

The rave reviews are in, and they're all true. Virgin Megastores pulled off a mega event last week (1/20) at the 100 Acts of Support - The Concerts for Tsunami Relief (with a mere 13 days of planning). That's the news hot off the entertainment presses. The immense success of Virgin's tsunami benefit was in part due to all of the impressive musicians who donated their time and efforts, plus the hard working folks in stores throughout North America. In one day and night, more than 100 acts played at 20 Megastores to help raise money for the victims of the unprecedented natural disaster that has left so many homeless, dead and without shelter and food in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Indonesia.

In Burbank, CA, according to World Music Product Manager Rick Banales, "an amazingly diverse group of performers played." The evening started off with Prof. I Nyomen Wenten and Adam Parr from Cal Arts World Music Department playing some beautiful Indonesian Gamelan music that really put the spotlight on why everyone was there. Next up was the great acoustic rock of V2 Recording artist Charlie Mars, who brought his heartfelt lyrics and rough-hewn vocals to songs with hooks strong enough to stay with you for days. The music of Virgin Records' Ricky Fante was next. He and his guitarist Scott Rickett played a 20 minute set of soulful, earthy music that summoned up the spirit of Otis Redding.

Added Banales, "It's an amazing thing when you have a sound that people can instantly pick out within one or two notes … when he started playing his soprano sax in the middle of the crowd, there was no mistaking Kenny G!" The music great was inspired to pull out his now-rarely-seen tenor sax to play a version of Average White Band's "Pick up the Pieces" that had everybody in the store clapping in time.

Overall, the whole night was amazing, from the humility and graciousness of the performers to the support of the crowd for the victims of the tsunami and the great work of the American Red Cross.

Back Stage after the BET Smokey Robinson special

Ricky Fanté, Rewind (* * * ½) This native of Washington, D.C. isn't the first young singer in recent years whose sound is inspired by the classic soul of the '60s and '70s. He distinguishes himself with raw, intense performances that takes you back to when soul wasn't a description, but a feeling. The brassy horns, mournful keys and kicking guitar licks that back him, makes you wonder if you've accidentally flipped to some time-warped AM radio station. But for all his retro trappings, Fanté's music feels remarkably fresh in today's musical landscape. —Steve Jones
